A mala is a strand of beads, typically knotted, that are used for counting and concentration during meditation or yoga. The number of mala beads on a necklace or bracelet can vary from 108, 54, 27, 21, or 19. Traditional malas, or Buddhist prayer beads, are made with Rudraksha beads, which grows on trees and embody peace and love, or wooden beads. However, healing malas are made from semi precious or gemstone beads that hold different metaphysical properties. For example, Tiger’s Eye are great semi precious beads for malas because they promote overall balance. Moonstone is great for promoting calmness, Jasper is great for courage, and Agate is great for creativity.
